While Vernon looks stoic and regal on first sight, on stage and in a group of people, he is wildly sociable, often using his actions to catch the crowd’s attention. However, when alone or with the people he is close to, he is introverted and mildly timid.Due to this, he is lonely, having closed off his heart to other people. As he gets used to the academy’s environment, he slowly starts to get in touch with his own emotions.

Early Life

Vernon is the youngest son of four, born from an accidental pregnancy. His father’s family owns a mega corporation, leading a good number of businesses in Paldea. These involved supermarkets as well as picnic peripheral. His maternal side of the family comes from a bloodline stemming from the Spider Lily clan in ancient Sinnoh, back then known as Hisui.Abandoned by his mum after his birth, he was cared for by his maternal grandparents in Montenvera. Here is he meets Azusa as an Azurill, having hatched from an egg from his grandmother. They passed on when he was three, thus he was sent back to his family’s home in Levincia.Back home, he does not get along with his own family and was neglected, left to fend for himself. His siblings they had their way with him, which included the use of fire-typed Pokémon to burn him for fun, as well as physically abusing him. The worst burn he got was from his oldest brother’s Houndoom, which caused a giant scar on his back, along with several smaller ones over his body that could not be removed, or heal properly. This caused his extreme fear of fires, extreme heat/high temperatures and burns, plus a fear of the Houndour evolution line at the same time.However, he finds comfort in watching Pokémon contests in his lowest of times, which started when he switches on the house's television one night. This is when he starts to practice ballet on his own, acting, as well as trying to dance with Azusa.Vernon started to rebel against his family's expectations once he was enrolled in Naranja/Uva Academy. Here is also where he first meets Saguaro, whom he had not realised he had fell in love with.He does a lot better there, as the teachers saw him for who he is, after getting past his rebellious, wild and artistic nature. Thus, he never came home until graduation day, just to declare his goals to the family. After a massive fight which got him disowned, Vernon leaves for Hoenn to pursue his career as a Pokémon coordinator.

Life as a Pokémon Coordinator

Vernon began his career as a Pokémon coordinator upon reaching Hoenn. It was not easy for him to start-off, due to being in a new region that is very different from Paldea. As he has only himself and his abilities to pull himself through, here is where his talents of photogenic memory and mimicking moves came into play.Early on, he had battled Pokémon trainers to train, as well to earn money to prepare the capital for contesting. After training for a couple years, he sparks off in his career, performing in Pokémon Contests, where he was known as a creative storyteller.His trailblazer performance that pushed him to the top was called “A Bubble Fantasy”, which made its debut during the Master Cute contest held in Lilycove. Vernon had challenged the current contest scene then, having defied gender norms, performing with Azusa which won. Ever since then, he is known as the “Fantasy-Faithful Star”, as this is his preferred theme to go by whenever he performed.“A star does not need just talent,” is his catchphrase. While hardworking, he is always smiling, having a sunny disposition and excellent charisma, qualities that attracted a lot of fans. Many admired his works and his bond with Azusa & Phantom, his Ceruledge, both of which had performed with him throughout his career.This was how he became highly popular, standing with and being buddies with fellow competitors, Juan & Brycen.Soon, he also wins the contests in the Sinnoh region before he goes around the world to several other jobs in his career. These go from product advertisements, modelling shoots and sometimes singing to musical performances.He had also signed with Pokéstar studios at a point, acting in several TV shows and movies. This is also when he starts giving more than his all into his work, which is why he reaches the top. Since then he acts, models, dances, does plays, all while being a guest performer in future Pokémon contests, entertaining his fan-club. Hence, Vernon has spent most of his life working.Due to how much he overworks without resting, the smaller injuries grew into chronic ones on his knees and ankles. He has also ignored his own emotional needs, burying himself into work to drown them out. This makes him into someone who hardly gets himself on tabloids, which while it is good, was ironic for an entertainer like him, especially one who is at the top of the chain, where scandals can easily happen.When his chronic injuries has started to disable his movements, Vernon makes the decision to pull out, retiring from the stage. Upon his retirement, he returns to Paldea to settle down and have a calmer life.However, his doesn’t stop in his job on the radio or voice work/songs, which kept his name up. His title as the past top Pokémon Coordinator has been heard around, even until this day.

Current Day as an Instructor

When back to Paldea, the first person who sought him out was Geeta, the Champion and Chairwoman of the Paldea League. While she invites him to be a part of the Elite Four member due to his abilities, he declines due to their work’s nature.Then, Director Clavell had reached out, having known his circumstances. He then offers for him to join Naranja/Uva Academy during its rebuild.That had been just after the Team Star incident one and a half years prior to the start of Pokémon Scarlet/Violet. After learning of the academy’s plight, he takes the chance and became its Literature/Theatre Arts instructor.The majority of Naranja/Uva Academy's students loved his lessons, which he gave great passion to and had a lot of patience with. Pokémon were allowed in his classes, which gives great joy as they enjoyed performing with ‘Instructor Azusa' and ‘Instructor Phantom’.Along with that, he rekindles the fire with Saguaro, who is now the instructor for Home Economics. They eventually found themselves safe with each other and eventually got together, where Vernon experiences being in a relationship for the first time, learning to be true to his own feelings.Ever since he joined the Academy, he lives in the present, surrounded by the love and care that he had always yearned for in the past.

About Raine, their Ancestor & the Spider Lily Clan

Vernon, Morty and Chris are connected to one ancestor, Raine (ハズキ Hazuki). Raine is one of two children from the leader of the Spider Lily Clan, Ryco (カガリ Kagari). She is was known to be different from the women of ancient Sinnoh, Hisui at that time, being a justice-seeking girl wearing a unique style resembling the Furisode girls in Kalos in the future.The Spider Lily Clan/ヒガンバナ団 (Higanbana-dan) is situated in the Alabaster Icelands, known for their supernatural abilities such as clairvoyance and speaking to ghost typed Pokémon. As such, ghost types were what they used in their clan, a well-known one being Hisurian Zoroark.While known as ‘infamous’ or ‘notorious’ due to their background, it is said that Ryco is a good friend of the Diamond and Pearl Clans, Raine being good friends with Adaman and Irida. She helps Akari/Rei with their tasks in Pokémon Legends Arceus (PLA), then leaving Hisui after the events of PLA.Raine first arrives to Kitakami during her travels, becoming good friends with the Mask Maker. This is as she was known by her Furisode style, which pairs well with the masks he makes. Having heard of their plight, she then decides to help Orgepon and her trainer out during her stay there.Through all of this, she eventually approached and got close to Orgepon, which the player reminds her of. Thus, Raine was there at the time of the incident, where she battled against The Loyal Three. The people had noted of her appearance as a ‘Vengeful Ghost that sided with the Orge’, which was her own Hisurian Zoroark.Due to her background and being an outsider, she was ousted from Kitakami upon fighting to clarify what had happened. After promising the Mask Maker that none of this will be spoken to anyone outside of Kitakami, she left, keeping herself low-key when she lives in ancient Johto.Hence, the people of Kitakami eventually forgot about the ‘Vengeful Ghost’, which was not written in the current version of the story.To remind herself to not be as impulsive as before, she writes it down on the scroll as a source of reflection. This scroll was passed down the bloodline, eventually landing into Vernon’s hands through Winters (シモツキ Shimotsuki), his maternal grandmother.Eventually, Carmine and Kieran’s grandfather recognised Vernon’s hair and eye colour, as they were the features of their ancestor’s closest friend, a very outspoken and justice-seeking Furisode girl, who is a good friend of ghost-typed Pokémon. He mentions that through looking at his ancestor’s belongings, he has never forgot about her since then.It is said that Raine’s spirit has never really rested due to the incident, until Vernon and the player helps to bring the truth to light.

The Aces

Azusa (Azumarill) | Phantom (Ceruledge)

Azusa was his very first Pokémon, who eventually became not just his guide Pokémon, but also one of his aces in battles. Following him since a baby, she is also a performer with Vernon during his prime as a Pokémon Coordinator. While she is not being vigilant over her trainer for his needs, she is playful and relaxed, although a stubborn.Phantom was his first companion he met when he had started school, as a Charcadet who had chased Vernon around because she wanted to follow him. Eventually, when Vernon is not as scared when around Fire-Typed Pokémon, he accepts her, choosing the Malicious Armour when presented with both during the treasure hunt.Both of them are Vernon’s most powerful Pokémon, who had travelled with him for a long time.

Their Story

How they Met

Long pink hair tied into a messy ponytail, held by a blue ribbon. Bright pink eyes. A tidy yet messy uniform.That was what Saguaro first saw during their first day of school, in an unexpected chain of events, all in the midst of their Homeroom Instructor screaming across the classroom.“Vernon, you’re going to get it from me if you do this again!”The boy’s name was Vernon, who was known as the artistic, rebellious troublemaker all over the academy in a just a matter of seconds, jumping into the classroom through the window as he was running late. Pulling his ponytail tight, he sighs as he walks to his seat in the classroom.“Well, I would have disrupted the class either way. Might as well go all out with a bang to remember.”A rebellious kid, always out looking for trouble. That was what many people think of him. But to be frank, Saguaro could not forget the day, for the way he looked was beautiful. That pink hair had went so well with the flower trees that have flown in when he opened it to jump through. Plus, he moved with grace, like a trained dancer.Those traits were that of a stage performer. But in reality, Vernon was far from being an extroverted person.When not arguing with the teachers, or practicing on a Shakespherian play, Vernon was often hanging out alone, walking along the school yard.“Why don't you eat lunch with the others?"“Exhausted. I get tired from hanging out with the others. They're really noisy, I prefer to eat or think alone."Vernon was someone different. Although he was an artistic and dramatic fellow, Saguaro was surprised to find that this classmate of his was a painful introvert. Nonetheless, they managed to get along well and started hanging out.Both of them enjoyed each other's quiet company, where Vernon finds it safe to be himself, a quiet and mildly timid person on the inside. They think a lot, had some banter, complain about homework and their classmates sometimes.“Well, I kinda said this to my senior, asked him, 'So do you want to break free, or go back to the tamers, making your elders proud but you're caged'."“To break out of tradition or follow it, that's what I meant."“I really wonder if it was a wrong move to say that to him."Upon hearing Vernon's words, that was eventually revealed to be directed at Hassel, Saguaro realises that there was more to Vernon that meets the eye. He notices that Vernon had always had his sleeves down regardless of the weather, like as if he was hiding something…hemming and hawing and whenever everyone asks him about staying in the dormitories for the holidays.Upon the completion of the treasure hunt, hence graduation, the both of them parted ways to pursue their careers, only to be feeling a yearning ache.It was then, they realised that they had fallen in love.

Rekindling the Romance to a Marriage

“Oh, what…Vernon! Oh my god…it’s been so long, I’m surprised to see you here!”Saguaro turns his head up upon hearing a surprised Hassel. It had been just after the Team Star scandal, when the current batch of instructors were just hired to teach.Those were the familiar long pink hair and pink eyes. However, something seemed to be a little different from Vernon, and it was not just about him holding a cane.“Hey, senior Hassel! I’m sooooo happy that you stayed with the arts!“It has been a very long while too, isn’t it, Saguaro?”While he had the similar amount of cheer within him as he very quickly puts up a dramatic act with Hassel, Saguaro finds a bit of melancholy and sadness within his expressions.Though, that has never stopped his heart from skipping a beat whenever he sees his crush either talking with the students, or having storytelling sessions.“Hey, what time…is your next class? I was thinking of having lunch together.”While they had been pining for over 30 years since their childhood, nothing was said, even though they had decided to hang out with each other like in the past. Things seemed different now, for their circumstances were different as they chatted with each other.Vernon had retired from showbiz.Saguaro also realises that one of his aces, his Azumarill Azusa…was staying with Vernon a lot more than in its Pokéball. She had a ribbon tied on her ear and was looking a lot more vigilant than your usual companion Pokémon. However, when he asks Vernon about it, there was a lot of hemming and hawing.Something was wrong.The more they got ready for their lessons and spent more time together, Vernon grows quieter. He swats off everyone’s questions of concern, always saying that he was fine and continuing with the day, until a frustrated Miriam decided to spill the beans to a concerned Saguaro.“There is something that he’s not telling us. I’m sure of it - a student’s Houndour accidentally fired an ember. I saw it in his eyes, he was terrified.”“I’m worried about him.”The echoing sentiments resonated between the both of them. Having thought of Vernon curling up in a corner out of fear made Saguaro’s heart hurt. However, he decides to help out when Vernon had went to restrain a pair of rowdy Salandits in the library, that quickly escalated into a turning point of a mistake.While restraining himself, Vernon was hyperventilating, the tears welling up his eyes upon getting his finger burned. He could not lift his head to even look at his crush in the eyes, although holding onto his hand as he said that he was fine, all while getting admonished by Miriam in the Nurse’s room.Upon leaving, as the both of them walked to a secluded area, Vernon quickly wants to run off to hide away, Saguaro catches him by the shoulder. Eventually this becomes their soundless confession, where he lifted Vernon’s hand and softly kisses it. As they kept the quiet moment, they accepted each other’s touch and started to date.“It’s ironic, isn’t it? Me not knowing what’s in a relationship, when someone of my age and caliber should have. I’m sorry, I’m so embarrassed…”“But you know, I love seeing this side of you. It’s adorable.”Even as Vernon initially struggles with his emotions, experiencing a lot of firsts when they started dating, Saguaro accepts every single part of him, as much as Vernon does. Things got around fast when they accepted each other and in the end, while Vernon treats the injuries Saguaro gets sometimes during his lessons, Saguaro goes to hug him when he’s having a tough time with his chronic illnesses. In the midst of all of that, like how Azusa trusts his partner, Vernon begins to be able to feel vulnerable enough to show his scars.Talk gets around, and it came down to talking about living together in the same house (for they were in the school’s dormitories at that time), navigating a married life in the future. Having heard all of this, as he cried, he makes his mind and prepares to propose.“I’ve got a lot of flaws. Having difficulty expressing my feelings is only one of many.”“If you are able to accept all of the flaws that come with me…will you be all mine?”Having accepting it, they got married just before the events of Pokémon Scarlet & Violet.

Current Life

Now as they navigate through their lives as instructors, things do get busy, especially since the students are slowly coming back before Florian/Juliana transfers into the academy.Despite that, they still took the time to spend with each other whenever they could, and know when each other’s not feeling well. Plus, they finally have a home of their own.

Their Dynamic

Both of them are on two sides of the spectrum. While Saguaro is openly affectionate, ironically, Vernon is extremely shy. He also has a lot of difficulties knowing and expressing how he naturally feels, so he bottles things a lot.However, as he gradually learns to be true to his own feelings, he starts to accept and also make the soundless gestures back to Saguaro. In a way, their way of communication is by touch. They don’t talk a lot when spending time with each other, which gives the both of them the peace and calmness they needed, away from the busy life they had.Sometimes they bicker a little, but they deal with their disagreements maturely. There’s rarely a sense of them falling out, but only the need to space themselves away for an hour or two. Things always work out as they talk it out at the end of the day.
